Congratulations to Wayne Cornelius on a Lifetime Achievement Award!
The Latin American Studies Association (LASA) has announced that the 2020 Silvert Award goes to Wayne A. Cornelius, distinguished professor emeritus of Political Science and U.S.-Mexican relations at UC San Diego.
LASA is the largest professional association in the world for individuals and institutions engaged in the study of Latin America. The Kalman H. Silvert Award was created in 1982 to honor the first president of the Latin American Studies Association and a leading figure in Latin American studies during his lifetime. It recognizes senior members of the profession who have made distinguished lifetime contributions to the study of Latin America.
Cornelius said he’s deeply gratified by the award.
Paul Drake, also a Latin Americanist and a former Dean of the Division of Social Sciences at UC San Diego, said: “In our field, this is the biggest award on the planet, now won by both Wayne and Peter Smith. It's hard for two people from the same university and department to capture this annual prize. Huge congratulations to both superstars!”
Peter Smith won the award in 2013.
Cornelius will be publicly congratulated by at the association's XXXVIII International Congress LASA2020 “Améfrica Ladina: vinculando mundos y saberes, tejiendo esperanzas” in Guadalajara, Mexico, May 13 –16, 2020.
