We are a powerful network with the largest number of alumni of all the divisions at UC San Diego. However, success is not measured by numbers alone - we are most proud of the variety of areas in which our alumni make a difference and lead fulfilling lives in academia, private industry, public service and nonprofit organizations.
We are eager to connect our alumni with the campus, students and faculty through cutting-edge programs and engagement opportunities showcasing the many highly-ranked departments and the global, national and local impact of fellow alumni. Suggestions and feedback regarding our programs are always welcome.

Gary Patton, Marshall ’77 (Urban Studies and Planning)
Gary Patton spent more than 30 years as a city planning professional in the San Francisco Bay Area. He worked in seven urban and suburban municipalities over the course of that time. He served as the director of city planning for the cities of Albany and Livermore. Patton was the deputy director of planning and zoning for the City of Oakland from 2000-2010. Throughout his work, he saw through the vision of UC San Diego's Third College (Marshall College): to return to your home community and provide leadership in public service that makes a difference. In his various leadership roles over 30 years, he facilitated the growth and development of the Bay Area's physical environment. As senior planning staff member in various agencies, Patton was responsible for complex policy recommendations to elected officials related to land use, urban design and the environment. In addition, he hired and trained young city planning professionals who have gone on to assume high level leadership roles with public agencies all around the Bay Area.
Joanna Mendoza, Warren ’87 (Economics and Political Science)
Joanna Mendoza is an attorney with the Law Offices of Joanna R. Mendoza, a professional corporation. She is one of the trustees on the California State Bar Board of Trustees, elected to a three-year term that began last October, representing District 3 (23 northeastern-most counties of California), in charge of regulating admissions and the practice of law in order to protect the public in California. The board is engaged in making ground-breaking changes in the practice of law, admissions, bringing legal services to the underserved and other major policy issues affecting the judicial system in California, those who operate within it and those it serves. Mendoza finds serving on the board an honor and an incredible responsibility.
