TMC 198: Thurgood Marshall College Directed Group Studies

Description: The purpose of the course is to enable UCSD students to conduct basic research on issues of urban education directed toward improving educational quality and preparing students for college. Students are involved in a Service Learning Project 10 hours per week for 10 weeks at Lincoln High School, Gompers Preparatory Academy, or The Preuss School UCSD. Students conduct a research project on a topic mutually acceptable to the course instructor and the supervisor at one of the 3 partnership schools. The intent of the project is assist the school site improve practice and to give UCSD students experience in gathering data, analyzing data, and reporting it succinctly. Students are expected to integrate material assigned in class with this field experience.

Undergraduate students enrolled in the course must attend 4 seminar meetings and must commit to interning for 10 hours per week at the school site for the entire quarter.  Students may only take this course for the Pass/No Pass grading option. During scheduled seminar meetings, students share their experience onsite and discuss barriers within their sites as well as ways of improving school departments. At the end of the quarter, students are required to write a ten to twelve page research paper that addresses their internship experience and what research says about working with at-risk students and their communities.
