CAT 124/125: Sixth College Practicum at Torrey Pines Elementary and San Diego Urban Discovery Academy

Description: The purpose of the course is to engage UCSD students in examining and experiencing the process of incorporating technology to assist in improving the academic development of educationally disadvantaged and/or rural K-12 student populations in San Diego and Imperial Counties. Students are required to serve 10 hours / week providing online academic tutoring services. Throughout the course students will have an opportunity to travel to school sites to meet the students they have been tutoring, complete a weekly journal entry reflecting on the service learning experience, and complete an online learning assignment. Additionally, students will select and present to the class an article from an academic journal, complete a reflective paper and a write a research paper on a topic related to the course content. Students are expected to analyze and synthesize journal entries, service learning experience, class discussions, and assigned readings.

CAT 125 is the Practicum Reflective Writing Course, to be taken upon completion of CAT 124. This 4-unit course prepares students to reflect and communicate the value of their academic and professional experiences gained through the Practicum Project and UCSD. Students will explore how effective they were in achieving the goals they set for themselves and define ways to improve for the future. Students also learn to share information with a variety of audiences through diverse communication styles.
