Urban Studies and Planning Program

USP 186/USP 187:  Senior Sequence Research Proposal

Description: A field research and service learning practicum composed of two classes (USP 186: Senior Sequence Research Proposal in the fall quarter, and USP 187: Senior Sequence Research Project in the winter quarter). This series is required of all students majoring in Urban Studies and Planning.  Over the six-month span of the Senior Sequence (September to March) each student (a) defines a theoretically-informed research question/topic of their own; (b) writes a research proposal to address their topic; (c) conducts the proposed study; and (d) turns the results into a research article using a format appropriate for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.  Students mainly focus on urban and regional planning/policy issues in the San Diego-Tijuana city-region (e.g., issue of sustainable development, affordable housing, transportation, environmental planning, infrastructure, regional food security, watershed management, crossborder planning).  They conduct their research individually and as part of student-mentor research teams.  The final requirement of the Sequence is a Senior Research Project (SRP). Students share the findings of their SRP in the form of poster board presentations and multimedia at USP.s annual Urban Expo in mid-March (important elements of science communication).

In addition to the Senior Sequence.s course work and lectures, each student must simultaneously complete 100 hours of service learning in an internship placement of their own choosing.  Often students interconnect their thesis project with their internship experience (a form of civically-engaged scholarship).
