Supporting Teacher Preparation

The Department of Education would like to acknowledge the following generous donors who believe in the power of education and the importance of having well-prepared teachers:

The Weil Family

Thank you to the Weils for establishing the “Weil Family Teacher Preparation Fellowship” – the first teaching preparation fellowship ever established in the Department of Education Studies. The fellowship is designed to support students pursuing a Master’s of Education and teaching credential in the department. The Weils are longtime supporters of The Preuss School UCSD as well as lifetime members of UC San Diego Chancellor’s Associates. They also help fund a variety of other initiatives on campus, including the Division of Arts and Humanities, ArtPower! and more. In addition, Christopher Weil serves as a trustee of the UC San Diego Foundation and has been a mentor at the Rady School of Management for many years.

Mark Freund and Trice Koopman

Thank you to Mark Freund and Trice Koopman for their continued support of graduate students pursuing a M.A. in Teaching and Learning: American Sign Language – English Bilingual Education. Their gifts continue to further ASL teacher preparation and instruction to students.

“In line with the Chancellor’s initiative to support graduate education, external funding allows us to attract students who might not otherwise be able to afford graduate school. We hope to grow the number of fellowships for stellar teacher candidates.”

- Amanda Datnow, associate dean of the Division of Social Sciences, professor in the Department of Education Studies and a board member at Preuss.
